Deerbrains - Hi Chris, first off could you tell us a little bit about yourself?

Chris King - I’m a Photographer based on the south coast of Kent, I’ve been making my photographs for about 15 years. Mostly my work gets described as ‘quiet’, which suits me.

DB - What was your first experience of photography and how did that lead you to become the photographer you are now?

CK - I’m not one of these people who claim to have always loved photography from childhood, or that I grew up with a camera in my hand. Although I do remember my brother in law Nigel showing me how to print from a negative at home when I was young, but this only came back to me fairly recently .

In fact I came to photography relatively late after I decided to return to education when I was about 26 (I had been an antiques restorer up to that point). I originally studied Film, but moved towards photography because I preferred to work alone.

This was pre-digital, and I really loved working in the peace and quite of the university darkroom. I think this experience of chemical photography at college has shaped the way I work now, I get no real enjoyment working digitally, but I can quite happily spend hours working in the darkroom. I always tend to come back to working with traditional process, to the point where my new work is partly about the physicality of film & paper.

DB - Can you tell us about what equipment your using?

CK - I mainly use a Bronica SQ-a Medium Format Camera; on occasion I have used Large Format, especially when I work on education projects with young people. I really prefer square format, its just the way my eye seems to compose things.

I work with film, mostly black & white, which I develop myself. I’m lucky enough have my own studio & darkroom. I don’t prefer film for sentimental reasons and I’m not against digital, in fact if I was working as a commercial photographer I would be using digital, you’d be mad not to. I’m interested in the physicality of negatives, contacts and prints, in fact my new work is very much about traditional photography’s material essence and its failings.

But, to be honest I’m not really interested in equipment, for me the less choice the better, thinking about what lens to use etc just gets in the way of what I’m trying to do or what I’m thinking about.

DB - Who is inspiring you at the moment photography wise?

CK - I’m drawn to photographers who are making work that is obviously integral to their everyday life (and I don’t mean just financially) I’m trying not to sound too mawkish or romantic, but I am attracted to photographers who work away at their art for years, often unnoticed, quietly creating photographs that only they could make.

British photographers from the late 70’s, like Raymond Moore were like this; there was no UK market for their work, and almost no galleries. In my opinion Moore is still woefully overlooked in British Photo History.

Today there is so much noise and gloss in photography; in fact there is just so much photography out there, that it’s often hard to find the sort of artists I’m taking about.

James Luckett (www.consumptive.org) is one, there’s something of Henry David Thoreau about him. Another is Paul Kenny (www.paul-kenny.co.uk/) who makes beautiful physical images. Both of these artists have an individual voice that only comes from really wrestling with the medium.

DB - Do you take much inspiration outside of photography?

CK - I would say the majority of my ideas & inspiration come from things other than photography. In fact the whole business of photography often has the opposite effect on me, it makes me question the medium and my decision to work with it, it can be such a stunted, awkward art form.

I’m particularly influenced by my surroundings, I like to work alone, which is probably why I don’t do many portraits, and is definitely one of the reasons why I pursued photography rather than film making. But I don’t really think too much about where the drive to make the work comes from; maybe the photographs themselves are the inquiry?

DB - Your work appears very conceptual and pre-meditated, do you have a thought that you wish to follow and develop or do you take inspiration from somewhere?

CK - I always have lots of ideas in various stages of maturity; I’ve learnt to give them space to develop in their own time. Its got a lot to do with coincidence and chance. A seed of an idea will be in the back of your mind for a while and then you read about something that links in with it, then over time it attracts more elements from your environment and begins to make sense. This process is intertwined with making pictures, exploring an idea with the camera.

This was what happened with the Tower of London, I spent exploring with the camera, making pictures and questioning why I was drawn to the places I photographed. I talked to people working at the Tower, their stories fed into what I was looking at and slowly it began to take shape.

DB - When you become the resident photographer of the Tower of London did you find it a daunting prospect? Can you tell us a bit more about it?

CK - Yes it was a daunting prospect, it was a paid commission for a famous landmark and I felt a huge weight of expectation. I felt I had to create something spectacular to warrant the attention and of course this didn’t really fit with the way I work, or the photographs I tend to make.

The Tower is one of the most photographed parts of London, so I had to try and make something that explored it in a different way. Through talking to the people who live and work there I realized that I wanted to get past the official history and the well-known stories and search for the overlooked or quieter stories that were also there

Like the papier-mâché horse made by Felix Joubert, which was used to display Henry VIII’s armour for almost a hundred years. This lovely object was hidden under the armour for all those years, almost unnoticed and then quietly packed up and moved to a warehouse somewhere, to be replaced by a new version.

The photographs I made while exploring stories like Joubert’s Horse became ‘Other Histories’.

DB - Do you have any new projects or commissions that your working on?

CK - I’m actually working on a few new projects. I’m doing more work in the studio and darkroom and I’ve been developing a new technique that I will be using on my new work. I recently moved to Lydd in Romney Marsh, very near Dungeness, this whole area is fascinating and my new ideas are strongly linked to this coastal landscape & its history

DB - What advice would you give to photographers starting out?

CK - Don’t expect it to be easy.

DB - Is there any emerging photographers you think we should look out for?

CK - I don’t really like the word ‘emerging’, I saw a competition recently for ‘emerging’ photographers and the cut off age was 35, that’s not emerging, that’s just young.

That said, I think the excellent work of Martin Brink (www.martinbrink.se) & Betrand Fleuret (www.bertrandfleuret.com/) is definitely worth seeking out.

He now uses his name for to head his clothing brand and has branched out to bring us the Heritage Collection which laid birth to a collection of Tennis shoes that play on his eccentric jet set lifestyle as a world number 1. Are they quite enough to knock the likes of K-swiss and Fred Perry of their podiums? It's possible as we feel it sits comfortable in the middle of the two brands with a blend of simplicity and glam. Deers In New Places

Getting out of London and heading way up north to Newcastle Upon Tyne, Deer Brains headed to the Baltic Art Gallery to spot some new sights. And to our delight, we found these colourful stags by Miho Unexpected and this great silhouette clock by Westergaard Designs in the gallery's funky shop. Hi deers!

Being out and about spotting cool things, in a different neck of the woods, got us pretty excited about visiting places all over the country (even all around the world) and on the lookout for new art, designers and must-see hotspots (oh and of course more deers).

So please get in touch if you spot anything, anywhere, that you think is rad for the DB team to explore.

We very much recommend a visit to The Baltic if you're ever in Newcastle. The iconic building, a transformed flour mill, is located on the south side of the River Tyne on the city's trendy Quayside. The gallery doesn't have a permanent collection, so the art you see is always different and interesting. And the views of the city and bridges from the viewing box at the top are pretty spectacular also.

Full Circle Autumn/Winter 2012 Launch

Do your clothes tell a story? At Deer Brains, we're pretty sure our's do, so when we were invited to Full Circle's Autumn/Winter 2012 launch we were drawn to the idea of their latest line as a 'storybook of style'.
The evening even came complete with a storyteller, who introduced the clothing to us, in a flurry of descriptive words. She weaved in and out of the mannequins, while explaining a story about a girl, in reference to the flowing garments and print-designs around her. Definitely unusual, but so were the designs.

Us Deer Brainers, were most taken in by Full Circle's stark use of colour and their passion for prints. The capes and coats were definite eyecatchers thanks to the use of bold red, green and blue fabrics. And the prints were inspired by everything from the architecture of religious temples to feminine floral motifs.

Another notable addition to the line was the use of striking slits in long, flowing skirts and the use of layering. Teaming feminine, chiffon-like fabrics with heavy-knit jumpers made the outfits look feminine but still cosy.

XCVB Autumn/Winter Part II

XCVB's initial A/W drop featured some quite refreshing designs which were well received, out of the blue we were told about a second A/W collection dropping which we are pretty excited about. It features some clean print T's but also Crews and snap backs. Like us we are sure your getting sick and tired of seeing the same Obey snapback everywhere. It has taken away the some of the appeal of the snapback, however being a smaller brand XCVB's offering has swayed our view on snapbacks! It features a nice design but also carries a bit of exclusivity in that it won't be bought up by all the sheep that shop in Size?, not that there is anything wrong with that. It's just not our style! The entire release is appears very wearable which is good because we think clothes are meant to be worn, worn anywhere! Rather than in a myspace esk self portrait to show your 1000 followers on Tumblr, XCVB is real and down to earth making original designs that are meant to worn. We are fans of XCVB here at Deerbrains and are very much feeling this latest release, head over to their website for more info and to purchase.

No Clothing

The kind people over at No Clothing recently sent us one of their current T-shirts, for those of you who haven't heard of No Clothing yet they are a t-shirt brand from Sheffield making limited items. They seek to create unique and original tee's that remain original due to their limited numbers, only 50 of each design so each one is pretty exclusive. When we received our 'Peter Lilley' tee our first impressions we good, presentation is important so we appreciated the neatly folded t-shirt with a considered label and stickers. Simple considerations for presentation make a huge difference! The printing is really good, all too often do we see t-shirts from small brands with poor printing. No Clothing has done well here with a high quality clean finish, we would think its safe to say that it wont disintegrate after the first wash. The t-shirt itself is from American Apparel which is nice as that means it is sweatshop free. Wearing it you straight away notice that it is very light weight, for some this may be off putting but you shouldn't be. We prefer lightweight tee's as they don't turn into a wet towel when you move on a summers day and you can use it to layer up in the winter or like us wear it under a light crew neck whilst cycling. Overall our verdict, its a great t-shirt and is very high quality. We highly recommend it and will be checking out future releases for sure!

Shane McAdams is an artist that resides in Brooklyn, NY. His ballpoint based series is one that portrays an abstract landscape background. Looking closely at his line drawings, you begin to decipher maps and roads that translate into a metaphorical sense. But personally, McAdams’s exuding distribution of colors is just beautiful.

Kev Munday was asked to put together a show to fill this window space at the 02 Arena in London by the guys at Graffiti Life. Over 8000 people a day walk past this area so naturally Kev jumped at the chance.

According to ASOS.com we are going to be seeing a mix of block colour (quite like last year), bold prints, mermaid shimmer, lace overload, pretty sweet tones and a couple more. One thing springs to mind is that an array of girls are going to be looking like Little Mix's number 1 fan but on the other hand done correctly this could be totally cute, refreshing and joyous like little Harjuku girls.

We get sent some strange things sometimes and these clear anorak by Passarella Death Squad are definitely strange at first glance, we weren't sure if we loved these or hated them at first but after doing some background research some consideration over their purpose we grew to like it. Passarella Death Squad as a brand pride themselves on their use of high quality japanese fabrics and being manufactured solely in Japan and London, they are relatively small but a collaboration with G-shock means that they shouldn't be dismissed. This anorak is a little edgy but we like that, we like that it is clear so you can see what your wearing underneath. It is styled with simplicity and function in mind, this may not be to everyones taste but at Deerbrains this goes down well in our books. Be sure to check their website and watch out for future releases, the other offerings are a little less outlandish for those who don't find this anorak to their taste.

Wayne and Gerardine Hemingway today announce a new ‘central’ home for their award-winning Vintage festival. The festival, which celebrates the best of British creativity and culture across the 1920s-1980s, is moving to central England to the grand stately home of the Boughton Estate in Northamptonshire for 2012. The Vintage Festival is one of the most content rich festivals in the UK, with an emphasis on cutting edge Fashion, Art, Design, Style, Film, Food and, of course, Music, celebrated across the decades.

The iconic British designers are moving the festival to the site on 13-15 July 2012 to allow more people in the UK to experience the event that won ‘Best New Festival’ last year. The Hemingway’s also want to involve more local businesses and community groups across the country in the festival and is encouraging people to bring their vintage contributions to the event.

Live Review - The Horrors, The Garage 16/12/2011

Teens draped in disgustingly oversized jackets and emo fringes were absent from The (usually leather-heavy) Garage queue tonight as East London hipsters waited in line to see the Horrors. With 80s icon Princess Julia, who you wouldn’t even see queuing up to get into an exclusive Vivienne Westwood after party, patiently standing in the cold on a Friday night...you knew this was the place to be. Crowds pushed through the doors at 10pm, leaving the commercial promotion of the gig itself completely defeated. They were there for the music, an intimate gig that anticipated spilt beers, flying drops of sweat and unrestrained moshing.

Psychedelic grunge band TOY open the show, looking as if they just stepped out of a 70s themed party, long hair draped over their eyes - it's a miracle they found their way up the stage stairs unhindered. As soon as guitar strings began being gently caressed, and drums softly hit, thoughts of a depressingly cold winter drown in a whirl of musical warmth. The band pulls the crowd in with ease, as people sway in time to the carefully strung riffs, the grunge element still present. “If I was on LSD right now, I’d be having a fucking awesome trip, seeing rainbows and shit,” I heard an audience member beside me say. He was right, the music seeping out of the speakers at that exact moment was other worldly, synths creating a third dimension to the sounds. You feel like you’re elsewhere, a place denounced of doubt and deprecation.

The clock was nearing midnight, and people pour out to smoke a quick cigarette before the Horrors were to brace the stage. “Faris passed out the other night, he wasn’t meant to play tonight, they had to cancel his other show at Brixton,” a tall blonde says in the smoking area, hastily looking around to make sure no-one else heard. On re-entering the venue, sickly green and blue lights force people to squint as they focus in on the Goth Geniuses making their way up on stage. Turning round to face the audience, Faris belts out “It’s Christmas time motherfuckers”, keeping it together well considering his poorly state. With little space to move, people pack themselves like sardines in a can, readying themselves to embrace the iconic wrath of the band.

The euphoric “Changing The Rain” opened the set, fusing different rattles and strings, materialising into a musical movement. Lyrical depth locks the audience into silence. For that one moment, it felt as though you and the melodically perfect music, are alone in the presence of some musical equivalent to God. ‘I can see through you’ moves everyone to sing in unison. The only thing absent at this point in time, are lighters in the air, and being in the middle of an empty field, a tender breeze swaying with the crowd. Faris ends the set on a strong note, the crowd in sheer adoration...maybe the new punk ‘thing’ is to have your lead vocalist sick instead of fuelled on drugs. It certainly worked in their favour tonight, that’s for sure.

We came across this brand on Instragram and decided to get in touch. We love the old school barber feel to it and from what we can see the quality of items are spot on.

Tally & Hoe is a passion project created this year by Anna Kolasinska, a graphic designer by trade, living in multi cultural Brighton. Brighton, life, family, fashion and tattoos are just a few elements which inspire the collections. The brand is about designing affordable jewellery and accessories that represent quintessential England with a vintage, unique and distinctive style. There are future plans to bring out more jewellery lines including bracelets and rings. The new year will also bring clothing such as tees, vests and a baby range. Collaboration projects with like minded small brands are also in the pipeline. Tally & Hoe has recently gone stateside and 2 necklace designs are now available from Petaluma Supply Co. an online vintage accessories website for the male market.

Replay have stripped things back to their origins for their AW/11 menswear collection, the concept is inspired by originality which they have brought into this collection by using traditional Replay treatments and processes. We think this has been very successful for the Italian denim brand, the looks carry a sense of nostalgia with the traditional washes and colour ways without being old hat. The styles are up to date and very fitting with current times.

This look is a personal favourite of ours, building off an outdoors theme with its neutral colours and smart casual aesthetic.

Beautifully shot and created by Tom Wrigglesworth and Mathieu Cuvelier, they take you inside the shop and meeting the man behind it and his story, his dreams and how long he believes the shop has left in its life. Quite an inspiring and charming little short, especially when Manceaux talks about his dreams and states with regards to his life

'As long as i have some water, a candle, a hardback book, an old piano, i'll still be alive...'

Definitely worth taking 5 mins from the day to watch.

Are we ever too young to like fashion?

Fashion. We all love it, right? Well, maybe Ann Widdicombe’s not a particular fan, but when does that love for fashion kick-off? And can you ever be too young to fall in love with style? With the likes of Victoria Beckham and Katie Holmes dressing their kids in super-stylish clobber from the off, we think not.
And it looks like the designers are cottoning on to the hordes of yummy mummies out there who are desperate to deck their kids out in cute and cool clothes.

If you thought all we had were the basic high street offerings of Mothercare and the like, think again. These days, fashion-conscious kids (or their fashion conscious mums and dads) can pick up mini-sized clothes from a host of cool names. There’s Myleene Klass with her Baby K range, AlexandAlexa with their designer offerings, and Joseph M where you can pick up women’s deals as well as high-end names like Chloe Kids.

Myleene’s Baby K label is now in its seventh season and the fun and funky designs seem to have gone down a storm with the parents. It’s available exclusively at Mothercare and you can expect outfits that range from the traditional to the less conventional. For instance, we love the knitted dress and tights which comes with triple-layered frill cap sleeves and embroidered bird detailing and cute-as-a-button teal tights for £27-£29.

But if you’re after something a bit more show-stopping, the likes of the Leopard Print Faux Fur Coat for £26.25 might be more your thing. Team with a ditsy ballerina-inspired outfit for a mini SJP look. We draw the line at make-up though.

Over at AlexandAlexa, meanwhile, you can get your mitts on a near-exhaustive list of designer outfits for little ones. Think Ralph Lauren, Burberry and Juicy Couture for starters.
The Burberry collection is like opening Wayne and Colleen’s wardrobe and finding all their gear has shrunk in the wash. If that’s your idea of style, then there’s plenty to choose from. If you’re daughter must wear only the latest fashions, then you’ll stay bang on trend at AlexandAlexa. Take, for example, the Burberry Faux Fur Mini Me Jacket for £280. It comes with a buckled funnel neck collar and plenty of faux fur fluff to keep your daughter nice and toasty.

Fashion-conscious boys get their fair share of goodies here, too. For winter cool, we like the Napapijri Off-White pom pom hat for £49 which features pattern of the moment: a snowflake design.

Finally, check out Joseph M if you fancy dressing your baby girl a la Harper Seven. Just the other week, Harper Seven was spotted out and about (well, clutched to her mother’s side) in a pair of £30 Chloe tights. Harper Seven’s tights may well have been navy blue, but you can get your hands on a pair of similar ribbed tights – in brown or pink – at Joseph M for £25.52.

And there’s plenty for little boys at Joseph M, too. For instance, Fendi have come up trumps in the baby shoes stakes. Their Baby Brown Suede Fur Lined Pre-Walker Shoes are 100% suede and come complete with a brown leather strap around the ankle. At £135.90 a pair they’re far from cheap, but if only designer will do, that’s the price you’ll be looking at.
So, just like fashion for men and women, baby fashion is becoming more and more varied – and just like the grown-up world of fashion – trend come and go in babywear, too. But is it all just a bit too much? With kids growing out of their clothes faster than you can fasten up a nappy should we really be spending a small fortune on babywear? Here at Deer Brains, the jury is out…

Lacoste seem to be on top of things this AW/11 unveiling items that are fit for purpose but with a bit of style thrown in for good measure. This fleece lined boot definitely takes influence from the Norwegian style boot with its leather stitching, high ankle coverage and the outdoor style laces. Add a deep vulcanised sole to the mix and you have a boot that is stylish and more than ready to tackle whatever wintered terrain the urban environment has to throw at the the modern man. Staying true to the Lacoste style the boot is quite contemporary looking with subtle Lacoste crocs, we like the contrast of the leather and the textured lower. Outdoors wear is making a comeback at the moment making these the ideal accompaniment to some dark wash jeans, oxford shirt and parka.

So recently we came across new and upcoming Bristol based brand 'Babalon'. We don't usually do this but we were pretty taken back by how quality the prints were that we decided to get them shot in a studio just so you can see what we were so impressed with when they arrived on our doorstep.

Design wise it's hard to say where you can draw inspiration from to create a print of a unicycling wrestler wearing a sea weed cap or a mechanical themed mexican skull emblem, regardless we're big fans and can't wait to see what Babalon conjures up in the near future. Whatever it is, we'll keep you posted.
